Founder of Business Tech Lab
Looking back, it’s clear that I was destined to fall into training and development. Teaching has been a part of who I am since I was a child, and I’m grateful to have found a fulfilling career that allows me to make a difference in people’s lives every day.
Even at a young age, I would come home from school and transform my bedroom into a makeshift classroom. I’d line up my dolls and teddy bears and act out the lessons I had learned that day. I was so passionate about teaching that I’d even create assignments and tests for my “students.”
As I grew up, my love for teaching only intensified. I knew that I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and help them reach their full potential. So, I pursued a career in training and development, where I could combine my passion for teaching with my desire to make an impact.
For the past several years, I’ve been honing my skills as a facilitator, instructional designer, and consultant. I’ve built engaging online courses and training programs in corporate America that helped people develop new skills and knowledge. And I’ve created learning communities where learners can collaborate, share knowledge, and support one another.
But could I make a bigger impact with my technical skills and desire to teach?
From Childhood Play to Fulfilling Career
My 20 year career in training has been an exciting journey of creating impactful programs and facilitating learning for people across diverse industries. From implementing Learning Management Systems to designing onboarding, technical training, and leadership development programs, I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the most esteemed law firms, non-profits, and hospitals.
I’m passionate about designing programs that help people develop new skills and knowledge, and I’m always looking for new and innovative ways to engage learners. This is why I initially found live streaming so intriguing.
Discovering the Power of Live Streaming and Online Business
In 2015, I stumbled upon an app called Periscope, and little did I know that this discovery would change the course of my career forever. Through this platform, I learned about the power of live streaming and the technical aspects of running a business online and creating digital content that captivates audiences. During this time I learned WordPress, Podcasting, Social Media for Business, eCommerce, shipping and order fulfillment.
This is when I started live streaming my hobby of soap making to a growing international audience.
From Soap Making to Teaching: My Journey as SoapLadyZ
I launched my handmade soap business By Zakia to a live audience under the moniker SoapLadyZ. Within the first day of launching byzakia.com, I received over 100 orders, and I knew that I was on to something special. As I continued to broadcast live, I was amazed to see that we were shipping to customers in 20 different countries! All from my dining room with a cell phone.
As I continued to grow my business, I realized that I had a lot of knowledge to share about natural product formulation and selling online. That's when I decided to self-publish The New Soap Makers Cookbook series and even launched Live Soap School, an online academy to teach others about creating natural products. I began speaking at local and national conferences on Soap and Tech.
All of this while working full-time and raising two children as a single mama.
Taking the Leap: From Soap Making to Virtual Event Production
When the pandemic hit, I knew I had a choice to make: continue working my full-time job while building my soap business part-time, or double down on my tech skills and take a leap of faith and pursue my entrepreneurial dreams full-time. I chose the latter, and it was the best decision I ever made.
Despite the challenges of starting a brand new company Virtual Experience Design Agency, during a global pandemic, my team and I produced over 100 virtual events that brought people together from all over the world. We leveraged the skills I learned in corporate America and my knowledge of live streaming and online business tech to create truly engaging and impactful experiences for our clients.
Revolutionizing Virtual Events: From Frustration to Innovation with MoveBackstage
As a virtual event architect, I noticed a glaring problem: while most solutions focused on creating a great experience for attendees, there was little consideration for the speakers and other key stakeholders behind the scenes. I knew there had to be a better way, and that's when I had my breakthrough moment.
I decided to take matters into my own hands and create my own software as a service called MoveBackstage. This revolutionary platform allows event organizers to plan all of the critical events for speakers and keep track of their progress leading up to the event. With Move Back Stage, everything from speaker briefings and rehearsals to technical setups and recordings can be managed in one place, streamlining the process and creating a unique professional experience for everyone involved.
No more last-minute scrambling or frustrating miscommunications - Move Back Stage ensures that all stakeholders are on the same page, and that everything runs smoothly from start to finish. It's been a game-changer for virtual events, and I'm thrilled to be at the forefront of this exciting new innovation in the industry.
