Understanding the business

Most technology decisions are made before anyone has looked carefully at the business. This is the work that comes first.

What this is

A structured look at how your business actually operates — not how it was described in a plan, and not how it works on the day everything goes right.

What it does. Who it serves, and whether that is really one group or two. How people find you. What happens between someone becoming interested and someone paying. Where the work gets stuck, and where opportunities quietly leave. What tools already exist, which ones are used, and which ones were bought and abandoned. And, more honestly than most discovery ever gets: what you are actually prepared to operate.

The output is a Business Operating Profile™ — a written, structured picture of the business that people and AI systems can both use as shared context.

Why the order matters

The most expensive mistakes in small-business technology do not happen during implementation. They happen before it, when nobody asked what the business was doing.

Automating a process nobody understood produces a faster version of a problem. Buying a CRM before knowing how customers actually move through the business produces a database that nobody maintains. Adding AI to a workflow that changes every week produces confident answers about a process that no longer exists.

That is why this work exists, and why it comes first. Orientation before automation. Understand the business, then decide what technology belongs in it — and what does not belong in it yet.

Why most businesses should wait

I tell 80% of my clients to wait.

Not because the technology does not work. Because the thing they were about to automate is not stable enough to be worth automating, and building on top of it would make it harder to change later rather than easier.

That conversation costs a fraction of the implementation it prevents. It is also the reason this page does not lead anywhere expensive — a profile is a small commitment that frequently saves a large one.

What you get

A written profile of your business you can hand to anyone — a contractor, a new hire, an accountant, an AI assistant — so you stop being the only place the business exists.

A clear reading of what is actually getting in the way, separated from the symptom you arrived with.

A recommendation on what technology makes sense, in what order, and what should wait. Sometimes the recommendation is that nothing should be built yet, and that is a real answer rather than a soft no.

If building is the right next step, the profile is what the build is configured from. Nothing gets assembled from a package.

How it works

One session, ninety minutes, in conversation. You bring the business; the questions are mine. Nothing needs preparing beforehand — the answers you already carry are the material, and the point is to get them out of your head and into a form other people and other systems can use.

The profile arrives written up afterwards. It belongs to you whether or not anything else follows.

Who this is for

An operating business — real customers, real revenue, often years of it — that has grown past the way it has been managed. The usual version of the thought is "I know there has to be a better way to do this."

If you are building something that does not exist yet, this is not the right door. The questions are different before there is anything running, and they belong in a different starting point.
